Apply for a Building Permit

While there are many things that you need to do before construction can begin, applying for a building permit is probably the most important. The fee that you will be charged for your building permit will be derived from the square footage and the type of building that you will be having constructed. It can take anywhere between a week and a month to have your permit application reviewed and approved, so it is important that you get it in as soon as possible. Once you get your building permit, it is important that you have it posted at the site of your construction at all times. It needs to remain on the site of construction during the entire time your building is being constructed until it passes its final construction and until someone begins to live in it.

Foundation Pre-Planning

You need to pay any down fees that are required before your foundation can begin to be constructed for your building. Before this can happen, the soil that is underneath the surface of your property needs to be tested to see how structurally stable it is. This will determine how your foundation will be designed, so it is very important to make sure that this gets done.

Surveys and Zoning

The exact size of your lot needs to be determined through a survey. Then, the site zoning requirements need to be looked at, which will determine how much of the property can be built on, as well as how tall your building can possibly be. This information is all very important because it will tell you exactly how big your building will be.

Get All of Your Permits You need to fill out any applications that need to be completed and pay any money that needs to be paid as a down fee. Whether you are going to be having an individual septic system or a community septic system installed, you need to get a permit for this. You need to go and purchase any permits for plumbing and electric that are you going to need for your construction. If you need to drill a well, you also need to get permit for this. You can get one through your Department of Water Resources or you can just have your well driller purchase your permit. If you are going to be building a new driveway off of a county road, you need to get the appropriate driveway permit.

Come up With Plans

You need to figure out just exactly you want to build. Do you want a building that is two floors, or three? How many bathrooms do you want there to be in your building? Do you want walk in closets and luxurious kitchens? Basement or no basement? All of these are important for you to take into consideration. Coming up with a good plan is just one of the few things that you need to do before you can begin your construction.
